DEBATE: “Green Deal, Social Deal. How can the ecological transition be an opportunity for all?” | Wednesday 16 February, 19:30

Calendar from 16/02/2022 to 16/02/2022

Dear friends of the European Parliamentary Association,

We are glad to invite you to “Green Deal, Social Deal. How can the ecological transition be an opportunity for all?”, a debate that will take place on Wednesday 16 February, starting at 7:30 pm, at 76 allée de la Robertsau, Strasbourg. This event will be held in English and is co-organised by the European Parliamentary Association and the Young Europeans of Strasbourg.

Please fill in this form to participate: https://forms.gle/iKbRyVpLhQfkHQ4K9

With the Green Deal, the EU aims to reach climate neutrality by 2050. This means that EU citizens will be required to clean up their cars, homes or lifestyles at a fast pace within the next 28 years. This transition risks being abrupt, as so far 71% of the European energy mix is still based on coal, oil and gas. Moreover, in the transition challenge, not all member states are starting from the same position and not every EU citizen is likely to be impacted in the same way.

What are European policy makers doing to make sure that the costs and benefits of the ecological transition are distributed in a fair way, across Europe and within member states?

We will answer this question with the help of two Members of the European Parliament:

  • Alexander Bernhuber, Member of the European Parliament from Austria, he’s member of the Group of the European People's Party. He sits in the Committees on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety, in the Committee on Petitions, and as a substitute member in the Committee on Culture and Education.
  • Brando Benifei, Member of the European Parliament from Italy, he’s head of the Italian Delegation in the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats. He sits in the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy, in the Committee on the Internal Market and Consumer Protection, in the Special Committee on Artificial Intelligence in a Digital Age, and as a substitute member in the Committee on Employment and Social Affairs, in the Committee on Legal Affairs and in the Committee on Constitutional Affairs.

This debate will take place within the framework of the Conference on the future of Europe. For this reason, you will have the opportunity to participate in two workshops before the debate. These workshops will be animated by the Young Europeans of Strasbourg and the aim will be to propose ideas and comments to submit to our guest speakers and on the platform of the Conference.

In compliance with French health rules and for the safety of all participants, the EU Digital COVID Certificate (pass vaccinal) will be required at the entrance.

We hope to see you there.

Sincerely yours,

Matteo ANGELI
