DEBATE: Europe's next industrial revolution. Towards a sovereign, more competitive and sustainable EU | 7 October, from 7 to 7:30 pm, on Zoom

Calendar from 07/10/2020 to 07/10/2019

Dear friend of the European Parliamentary Association,

We are delighted to invite you to “Europe's next industrial revolution. Towards a sovereign, more competitive and sustainable EU”, a videoconference that will take place next Wednesday 7 October, from 7 to 7:30 pm, on Zoom.

To participate, you just have to click here, the day of the debate: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/84776804872

The European Parliament is currently discussing its new industrial strategy for Europe, a piece of legislation which has a triple ambition: accompanying European industries through a green and digital transition, while, at the same time, helping them to face an increasingly fierce, and sometimes distorted, competition. The overall objective is to ensure that European industry can lead the way as we enter this new age and to achieve “strategic autonomy” (or, as some would call it, “European sovereignty”), a concept recently described by the European Council President Charles Michel as “our generation’s goal.”

Questions to be addressed include: What are the key elements of the European strategy? Should the European industrial policy support the creation of European champions, notably in the digital field, capable of counterbalancing the power held by American or Chinese businesses How can the European Union’s industrial strategy address climate change while fostering the global competitiveness of its businesses and ensuring its sovereignty? In what way can competition policy help European industries in their effort towards climate neutrality?

We will try to answer these questions with the help of:

MEP Maria da Graça Carvalho (EPP): She is actively engaged in ITRE, IMCO, FEMM and AIDA committees, while she is also co-chairing the parliamentary intergroup on Long-term, Sustainable Investments and Competitive European Industry.

MEP Stéphanie Yon-Courtin (Renew Europe): she is Vice-Chair of the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs and rapporteur on the annual report on competition policy of the European Parliament.

Kris Best: she is Research Associate to the President at the Hertie School of government and Affiliate Policy Fellow at the Jacques Delors Centre. Her research focuses on European economic integration, fiscal policy, financial regulation and the role of EU competition policy in industrial policy.

We remain at your disposal for every additional information and hope to see you there.

Yours sincerely,

Matteo ANGELI
