9 to 13 January : Cinema week dedicated to Sergei Parajanov

Calendar from 09/01/2017 to 13/01/2017

The Permanent Representation of Ukraine and MICT France-Ukraine association invite all colleagues and friends to a cinema week dedicated to Sergei Parajanov, a genius of cinematography. The screenings will take place on 9, 10, 12 and 13 January 2017 in the projection room of the Palais.

Sergei Parajanov (9 January 1924 – 20 July 1990),  a truly multicultural phenomenon, was a film director and artist of Armenian descent who made significant contribution to world cinematography through Ukrainian, Armenian, and Georgian cinema. He was one of the founders of the Ukrainian tradition of “poetic cinematography”. The Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors, his most famous film, explores the beauty of Ukrainian tradition and esthetics. His movies were highly appreciated by Andrei Tarkovsky, Michelangelo Antonioni, Jean-Luc Godard, Federico Fellini, Bernardo Bertolucci and other famous film directors. Parajanov was also part of the dissident movement in the Soviet Union and had spoken against the repressions of Ukrainian intellectuals by Soviet authorities.

On 9 January, on the occasion of Parajanov’s birthday, the cinema week will be opened at 18:30 by Parajanov (biographical film, 2013, original version with English subtitles) followed by a glass of wine reception hosted by Ambassador Dmytro Kuleba.

The Parajanov cinema week will be continued on:

10 January 2017 at 12:00 with Ashik Kerib (1988, original version with French subtitles);

12 January 2017 at 18:30 with The Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors (1964, released abroad in 1965 as Wild Horses of Fire, original version with French subtitles);
