DEBATE: Security first: the Polish EU Presidency, a pivot for European defence?

DEBATE: Security first: the Polish EU Presidency, a pivot for European defence?

Calendar the 01/04/2025

Dear friends of the European Parliamentary Association,

We are glad to invite you to a debate entitled « Security first: the Polish EU Presidency, a pivot for European defence?», which will take place on Tuesday 1 April, from 20:00 to 21:15, at the European Parliamentary Association, 76 Allée de la Robertsau, in Strasbourg.

If you wish to attend, please confirm your participation here: https://forms.gle/tJRvK89QdakUcaGV6

Join us for a discussion with two leading Members of the European Parliament actively involved in shaping Europe’s defence strategy:

- Michał Szczerba (EPP, Poland): he is a member of Civic Platform, the party of Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, and he is the standing rapporteur on relations with the United States for the European Parliament’s Committee on Foreign Affairs. He is also a member of the Committee on Security and Defence, and he served as President of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly from 3 October 2023 until 21 June 2024.

Nicolás Pascual de la Parte (EPP, Spain): he is the coordinator of the centre-right European People’s Party (EPP) in the Committee on Security and Defence. He served as the Ambassador of Spain to NATO from 5 November 2017 to 13 September 2018 and as the Ambassador of Spain to the Political and Security Committee from 27 March 2012 to 7 May 2017.

From January to June 2025, Poland holds the Presidency of the Council of the European Union and as such has a steering role in all EU policies.

What comes next? How can the Polish EU Presidency drive meaningful progress? What urgent steps are needed, and what threats lie ahead?

The debate will be held in English and will address these critical questions.

A cocktail reception with some Polish specialities will follow.

This event has been made possible thanks to the support of the City of Strasbourg, the Collectivité européenne d’Alsace and the Région Grand Est.

We hope to see you there.
