Last 29 October, Valencia and the surrounding region were severely hit by an extreme weather phenomenon that left more than 200 victims and incalculable material damage. Thanks to the organisation of an extraordinary network of volunteers, the basic needs of the population (food and clothing) were met. However, a great deal of reconstruction work remains to be done, and it will be a long time before life returns to normal.
More than 100,000 vehicles were destroyed. Added to the fact that public transport is either non-operational or very limited, thousands of people have no means of getting around, shopping or even getting to work or school.
A platform of local entrepreneurs and the Alberto Contador Foundation (a former professional cyclist) have created ‘Bikes against mud’ (Bicicletas contra el lodo), a network which buys bikes and gives them to people who need them, as well as repairs old bikes donated by private individuals. 300 bikes have already been handed in and over 1,600 people are waiting for their turn!
We would like to make our contribution from Strasbourg, the capital of cycling. We look forward to seeing you on 28 November between 11.30am and 2.30pm at the entrance to the PDH to taste some spécialités gourmandes that we will prepare for you. Your contributions will go directly to the above-mentioned network to help buy as many bikes as possible (bikes bought in local businesses to encourage local trade).
For those of you who can't be there on Thursday but would like to contribute, you'll find some useful links below, which will also allow you to see what's already been done.
For more information, please contact Mia Mengual on behalf of the Spanish team.
Thank you very much for your support!
