Calendar from 18/09/2024 to 18/10/2024

We are glad to invite you to a debate entitled “Towards the next European Commission. What are the expectations of the European Parliament?”, which will take place during the next plenary session week, on Wednesday 18 September, from 20:00 to 21:15, in the villa of our Association (76 allée de la Robertsau, Strasbourg).

Please confirm your attendance by filling this form: https://forms.gle/p4Ydf8nBQfhjxDvA9

As the new European Commission begins to take shape, the European Parliament will have a crucial role to play.

Member states have already nominated their candidates for Commissioner posts. Now, over the coming months, each Commissioner-designate will have to appear before the parliamentary committee responsible for their proposed portfolio, which will vote on their suitability for the job.

After that, the President of the Commission, the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and the other members of the Commission as a whole will be subject to a vote of approval by Parliament.

As this process begins, what are the expectations of the European Parliament?

We will have the opportunity to discuss this with three newly elected Members of the European Parliament:

  • Michał Szczerba (EPP, Poland): he is a member of the Civic Coalition of Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk. Before being elected to the European Parliament in June, he had been a member of the Polish Parliament since 2007 and was elected President of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly in 2023.
    In the European Parliament he is a member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs and substitute member of the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy and the Subcommittee on Security and Defence;
  • Cynthia Ní Mhurchú (Renew, Ireland): she was elected to the European Parliament on the ticket of the Fianna Fáil party as a representative of people of Ireland South. Previously a teacher, broadcaster, barrister and mediator, she has extensive experience in journalism and the media.
    In the European Parliament, she is a member of the liberal Renew Europe Group, a member of the Committee on the Internal Market and Consumer Protection and the Committee on Petitions, and a substitute member of the Committee on Transport and Tourism.
  • Vladimir Prebilič (Slovenia, Greens/EFA): He was elected to the European Parliament on the list of the Slovenian green party Vesna. He has been Mayor of the Municipality of Kočevje since 2010, a professor at the University of Ljubljana, and a member of the European Committee of the Regions and the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe. In 2022, he was a candidate for President of the Republic of Slovenia, where he received 10.7% of the vote as an independent candidate.
    In the European Parliament, he is a member of the Committee on Regional Development and a substitute member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs and the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs.

This debate will be held in English and will be followed by a cocktail reception.
