The Amicale celebrates the 75th anniversary of the Council of Europe

Calendar the 14/06/2024

Among the events organized by the Amicale to mark the 75th anniversary of the Council of Europe, the most important will take place on the 14th of June.

The event, chaired by Denis Huber, President of the Amicale, will begin with a speech by Bjørn Berge, Deputy Secretary General. He will open the first part of the event, entitled “A journey through 75 years of history of the Council of Europe”.

Among the highlights, the Amicale's theatre group, Tagora, will be performing speeches by leading figures in the history of the Council of Europe. In addition, a number of testimonies from staff who have worked for the Organization at different times, including those based in the field offices, will be shared.

Among these testimonies, Despina Chatzivassiliou, Secretary General of the Parliamentary Assembly, will reflect on the creation of this body and its driving role within the Council of Europe. Maria Tsirli, Registrar of the European Court of Human Rights, will underline the importance of the European Convention on Human Rights and the Court as the judicial organ of the Council of Europe. Ambassador Vesna Batistić Kos, the EU's Permanent Representative to the Council of Europe, will highlight the privileged partnership between the Council of Europe and the European Union.

From Churchill's speech in Zurich in September 1946 to the recent adoption of the Framework Convention on Artificial Intelligence in May 2024, we hope to take you on a memorable journey through space and time.

This “journey through 75 years of the history of the Council of Europe” will take place from 3 pm to 5:30 pm in room 1 of the Palais, followed by a concert by the 12 Stars Band and a social gathering at the Blue Restaurant of the Council from 6 pm to 8:30 pm.

The event will be available online. If you would like to attend in person, please register before noon on 13 June using the following link: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSd4A9e2nK0xLQ2MqmSL9x3hAyGoC9-Ky4VUtmcGal2eVXI2fQ/viewform?usp=sf_link
