Dear friend of the European Parliamentary Association,

We are delighted to invite you to “How can Europe beat cancer?”, a videoconference that will take place on Wednesday 27 Januaryfrom 7:00 to 7:30 pm, on Zoom.

Stepping up the fight against cancer is of fundamental importance for Europe’s future. Cancer is today the second leading cause of death in the continent and an estimated 40 per cent of European citizens will face it at some stage in their lives.

At the beginning of her mandate, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has made this issue a priority and committed to a “Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan”, which has not been released yet. In the meantime, last September the European Parliament’s Special Committee on Beating Cancer (BECA) started its activity and is giving its inputs to the Commission’s plan. In more general terms, the Europe’s Beating Cancer plan is expected to play a major role towards the establishment of a European Health Union.

What does the Europe's Beating Cancer Plan aim to achieve and how? What kind of work is the European Parliament currently doing on this topic? What are the EU priorities in terms of prevention, research, access to treatment, survivorship and palliative care? How is it possible to reduce the inequalities in health and, in particular, the large differences between Europe’s west and central and eastern countries in handling cancer? How is the coronavirus crisis impacting cancer patients and how is it affecting the EU’s plan? What will success look like?

We will discuss about it with:

Tomislav Sokol, Member of the European Parliament for the European People’s Party. He sits as a substitute member in the Special Committee on Beating Cancer and follows closely the files related to EU health law;

Solange Peters, President of the European Society for Medical Oncology. She is head of the medical oncology service and chair of thoracic oncology in the Oncology Department at the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire Vaudois in Lausanne, Switzerland.

We remain at your disposal for every additional information and hope to see you there.

Yours sincerely,

Matteo ANGELI
