Amnesty International and the Swiss referendum

Written written the 12/11/2018

Dear colleague and members of the Amicale,

From time to time, I will speak to draw your attention on an important political event in the news.

This month, a referendum will take place on 25 November in Switzerland, an event especially important and relevant for the Council of Europe.

The Federal Popular Initiative "Le droit suisse au lieu de juges étrangers", often known as the initiative for self-determination, is a project aiming at putting the federal Constitution above international treaties signed by Switzerland. The results could affect the application of certain treaties, especially the European Convention on Human Rights.

The article linked down below by the director of Amnesty International - Switzeland, Manon Schick, reveals in details what is at stake:

"Une attaque sans précédent contre nos droits fondamentaux"
