Car-pooling: share your car

Written written the 13/03/2012

The Amicale and the Staff Committee’s “Environmental questions” WG are setting up a car-pooling scheme to give staff members working in Strasbourg the opportunity to share the journey between home and work with one or more colleagues. A new secured website has been launched with the help of DIT: the access is restricted to staff members and members of the Permanent Delegations.

You can consult the co-ordinates and availability of colleagues willing to share their car and register yourself online. The conditions (free-of-charge, splitting petrol costs, itinerary, frequency, etc.) should be agreed on directly with the persons concerned.

Car-pooling website

Car-sharing consists in the joint use of a vehicle by a non-professional driver and one or more passengers for all or part of a specific journey. This type of transport is an effective way of countering the problem of congestion at peak hours as it entails higher car occupancy (which is less than 1.3 in most French towns and cities) while reducing the number of vehicles on the roads.

Car-sharing therefore helps reduce not only the amount of traffic and pollution but also travelling expenses as the cost of each journey is divided by the number of passengers. It also helps re-establish the sort of interaction that has been lost in public transport. By car-sharing with your colleagues you will reduce the Council of Europe’s environmental impact, travel in good company and save money. What are you waiting for, make intelligent use of your car!
