The Consulate General of Luxembourg in Strasbourg invites you to discover one of the most ambitious industrial wasteland reconversion projects in Europe: Belval.
Once the site of Luxemburg’s biggest ironworks, this area now hosts the City of Science, Research and Innovation.
Nowadays the City hosts the main campus of the University of Luxembourg, some public research centers, many firms and institutions such as the National Research Fund and the agency Luxinnovation. For their construction, materials such as bricks and metal have been chosen in order to evoke the industrial past.
The blast furnaces in Belval have been preserved, thus mixing the industrial heritage to a contemporary architecture. They are not only references from a long-gone era, but also landmarks of the new Belval.
The industrial remains are open to the public and the wonderful public spaces created by this original project of preservation are the theater of cultural, sport and social events.
