Scottish dancing

Written written the 14/06/2012

The Scottish Country Dancing group, which is run by Sheila Roberts (Chair) and Elisabeth Hunter (Treasurer) meets on Tuesday evenings in the squash court from 7 to 9 pm . There are an unlimited number of dances to learn: the faster reels and jigs and the more leisurely strathspeys, those from the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society as well as the new ones which are invented by the group or other groups. The group combines the learning of new dances in preparation for social dances or day schools with practising old favourites.

The teacher, Hans PRADE, who comes from Freiburg-im-Breisgau to teach the group each week, has been dancing for many years and has taken part in numerous summer schools in St Andrews, Scotland.

The Scottish Country Dancing group also organises day schools once or twice a year. These day schools take place in one of the village halls around Strasbourg and are usually followed by a social dance in the evening. The day school is taken by a teacher from the wide network of Scottish Country Dancing groups across Europe and members of other SCD groups also travel to Strasbourg to take part. Similarly, the members of the Strasbourg SCD group travel two or three times a year to day schools in Freiburg, Luxembourg, Karlsruhe and other places in the surrounding area.

In the past, members of the SCD group have been asked to give demonstration dances at the Burns Suppers organised by the Cercle International and other such occasions.
