Albania is a country in transformation. Amidst the tension between old structures and new opportunities, the country is trying to reinvent itself. As in every transition, there are conflicts over status, resources, and power. The system celebrates winners and neglects those left behind. Elisa Berdica regularly returns to her home country to capture specific social challenges that the country is facing in recent years. The RURALB project focuses on rural life, mostly in the northern mountains and the southern coast. As modernization and urbanization progresses rapidly, rural communities are faced with issues as the rapid growth of mass tourism, the exodus of the younger generation, social rejection, and poverty. Concurrently, the project seeks to highlight and contribute to the preservation of Albanian culture and traditions.
