Duncan is a British–Finnish artist who has been working mainly in Finland, but also in the UK, Ethiopia, Sri Lanka and France). Duncan graduated with a distinction from the master’s programme of the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts in 2009, having studied his bachelor’s degree in the UK. He has exhibited in various galleries and national museums internationally (in 11 countries), has been awarded numerous awards and grants, and his works are in various collections, such as the Saastamoinen Foundation Collection and the Finnish State's Art Collection.

The 'Interruptions' series features monochrome pictorial elements informed by an ongoing theme in Duncan’s work: the distinction between humans and animals. The animals and scenes are often surreal, humorous and disturbing, with a kitsch undertone. Such images provoke considerations about what constitutes being human and how we correspondingly consider all other forms of life. Clean and bright lines are then rudely overlaid upon these faded and half-forgotten scenes and images, complimenting, masking and encoding them and jolting the eye of the viewer.

Technical description: Ink and acrylic on canvas (dimensions variable, e.g. 90 x 116 cm)
