Haru desu! Japan celebrates the springtime flowering of the cherry trees

The three young Japanese cherry trees in front of the Council of Europe burst into delicate pink blossom this week. The occasion was marked by a photo with Deputy Secretary General, Bjorn Berge, the Permanent Observer of Japan to the Council of Europe, UCHIDA Hiroyuki, and his staff from the Consulate-General. Several Council of Europe pupils of Japanese and their teacher, Ryuji Takano, were also there to enjoy the moment.

The Japanese language section of the Amicale is proud to launch a new activity to celebrate the culture of the Land of the Rising Sun. Come and learn the subtle art of Nihonga (multi coloured Japanese painting) and sumi-e (monochrome painting using “Indian ink”).

Write a haiku and win a prize! The Amicale is launching a new haiku competition on 11 February 2025

Following the success of last year’s haiku competition, the Amicale is announcing a new competition. The 11th of February is Japan’s National Foundation Day (建国記念の日, Kenkoku Kinen no Hi). This date celebrates the legendary founding of Japan by Emperor Jimmu, the first Emperor of Japan, who is said to have ascended to the throne on this day in 660 BCE.
