Printers’ Day: a whole year dedicated to Gutenberg

Calendar from 23/06/2018 to 24/06/2018

Since 2004 the association Espace Européen Gutenberg has been working to set up a centre devoted to print and the graphic arts in all their forms, spanning the time from the invention of movable type until the advent of 3D printing. Its name: the Conservatoire & Ateliers de l’Imprimerie et des Arts graphiques.

The development of typography and of printing using movable type around 1454-56 in the upper Rhine area was a factor that contributed greatly to the spread of the written word. This year, 2018, marks the 550th anniversary of the death of Gutenberg, and provides the opportunity for the Espace européen Gutenberg – with the support of the City of Strasbourg and the Eurométropole – to bring together many members of the cultural community as part of an outstanding programme covering the art of printing and the book.

This 4th Printers’ Day, which forms part of “2018: the Year of Gutenberg”, puts the spotlight on six symbolic sites in the historical heart of Strasbourg, where professionals with direct or indirect links to printing will be demonstrating their skills. Visitors will be invited to stop off at various workshops or studios en route and admire – or even take part in – different demonstrations and discover Gutenberg and his revolutionary invention.
