An Unexpected Friend – Multilingual Picture Book on Human Rights

Written written the 07/02/2017

Vera and Leo are two friends from different worlds. She is a young ant, he is a young spider. They play together all the time, taking advantage of their differences. But one day, a soldier ant discovers their friendship and Vera is brought before the Queen. What will happen to their friendship?

This tale about diversity, prejudices and friendship provides a playful tool to discuss with children a contemporary societal problem such as the rejection of the “other.” It also stirs the discussion about when disobeying orders is the right thing to do.

The book is aimed at children between 4 and 8 years of age and is available in the following bilingual versions: French-English; French-German; French-Bulgarian; English-German; English-Italian; English-Bulgarian; Spanish-Italian; Italian-German.

It can be found at the newspaper kiosk at the Council of Europe, as well as at the following bookshops: La Bouquinette and Librairie du Monde Entier (Strasbourg), Librairie Totem (Schiltigheim), Buchhandlung Baumgärtner (Kehl, Germany), Jos Fritz Buchhandlung (Freiburg, Germany), Bottega del libro (Macerata, Italy), Il Museo dei Bambini di Roma (Italy), Il Nautilus (Tolentino, Italy).
