BIOGRAPHY

Christiana Kazeli was born in 1964 in Famagusta, Cyprus.

Her early career steps involve working in a very well known firm of Architects and Townplanners in the draughtsman department.   As design elements were of the utmost importance to all the projects undertaken by the firm, valuable experience with regards to architectural drawing and design skills was gained throughout her 12-year employment there.

In 1994 she moved to a completely different field of employment, becoming a life and health underwriter for a Life Insurance Company.  In 1998 she moved on to became Life Manager, a position she held until 2007, when through attending a local glass workshop for a short seminar, glass took over, becoming her passion and full time profession.

Attending a number of seminars and workshops in Greece and U.K., she set up her own studio in 2007 situated in the suburbs of Nicosia, where she designs and creates kilnformed glass.

HER WORK

A rather quiet low-profile person in her personal life, (almost black and white if colours could depict characters) Christiana's  work almost fully consists of brilliant bright colours and clean lines.

She mostly uses kiln formed techniques for her work.  Glass designs first come to life on paper.  Glass pieces are then set up in layers to form the design, with coloured powdered, broken or crushed glass added to it to reach the desired colour effect and texture, often enhanced with the inclusion of metal leaf or foil such as bronze, aluminium, copper, gold and silver.  Finished design is then fired to almost 830 degrees C where all glass and other materials fuse.  After controlled cooling, or annealing, as it is called in the kiln formed glass world, the finished design with all of its components has become a single piece of glass art.  This piece can be refired to different temperatures and cycles and in moulds in order to reach a 3D shape.  A simple firing cycle can last about 30 hours.  More intricate work can take up to 2 or 3 days, as the bigger the end result makes the whole procedure much slower.  Before completing a glass design, sometimes cold work is carried out to it, for example, sandblasting, to give it the desired effect.  Designs are always created bearing in mind the best possible effect light can bring to a piece.

Christiana’s influences mainly come from the bright and beautiful colours found in her surroundings.  Cyprus is a place where the sun shines almost throughout the year, bringing out  bright vibrant colours and shades  to even the simplest of things.  Being  born and raised in a town with some of the most beautiful coasts on the island has made the sea another major part to her influences.  Last but not least, the island’s rich history, culture and tradition have been another major factor that has influenced her work.

Most of her work is commissioned and clients’ wishes play a major part to the end result, however there is always time for her own designs which almost always take longer to complete as she is the most demanding of her clients!  Her work includes installations of wall art, decorative panels, light panels, mirrors, small stand-alone sculptures, platters, gifts for events and corporate gifts, and other smaller pieces and architectural, decorative as well as functional work.  Her work is exhibited in the Centres of the Cyprus Handicraft Services  as well as a small number of galleries across the island.
